Bureau for Children With Medical Handicaps (BCMH):

BCMH is a health care program in the Ohio Department of Health that provides services to children with special health care needs. These special needs may be a result of a condition a child is born with or develops after birth. Services needed may include surgery, prescription drugs, therapies, special equipment and supplies, hearing aids, etc. BCMH may be able to provide services to help diagnose or treat a child's chronic health problem.

There are three programs within BCMH; The Diagnostic, the Treatment; and the Service Coordination Plan.
  • The Diagnostic program helps with the cost of testing required to confirm or rule out if a child has a condition that will need continued treatment or monitoring. This program is good for 3 months.
  • The Treatment program helps with ongoing needed services. The Treatment program is good for 1-2 years.
  • The Service Coordination program helps families locate and coordinate the services the child is receiving. It does not cover the cost of testing or treatment. Only children with certain conditions are eligible for this program.

Eligibility Requirements for BCMH include:

  • Must be under the age of 21 years
  • Be a resident of Ohio
  • Be a permanent U.S. resident or U.S. born
  • Be under the care of a BCMH-approved physician
  • Have an eligible medical handicap
  • Treatment program requires families to meet financial eligibility
